Hôtel de Saint-Aignan preserves layers of aristocratic ambition and immigrant history in the Marais.

Architect Pierre Le Muet constructed the original mansion for Claude de Mesmes, the finance superintendent under Cardinal Mazarin. The property later passed to Paul de Beauvilliers, Duc de Saint-Aignan, who installed a grand staircase and converted the upper level into apartments. André Le Nôtre redesigned the grounds into a formal French garden, establishing a classic aristocratic residence in the Marais district.

Following the French Revolution, state authorities confiscated the mansion and used it as local municipal offices before dividing the complex into commercial premises. Working-class Jewish immigrants from Russia, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine established craft workshops inside, creating an active community captured by photographers Eugène Atget and Frères Seeberger.

Wartime roundups under the Vichy administration led to the arrest, deportation, and murder of Jewish residents in Nazi camps. The City of Paris eventually purchased the site and classified it as a historic monument. Extensive restoration campaigns directed by Jean-Pierre Jouve and Bernard Fonquernie prepared the mansion to house the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme.
