Al-Azhar Mosque anchors Islamic higher learning in Cairo.

Fatimid commander Jawhar al-Siqilli established the mosque following the conquest of the region, using limestone quarried from the Mokattam Formation. The compound takes its name from az-Zahra, an honorific associated with Fatima. Although founded as an Ismaili base, the site quickly evolved into a public center for legal studies. Appointed judges conducted lessons for the general public, including dedicated doctrinal sessions for women.

Vizier Yaqub ibn Killis established formal legal instruction on the site by hiring professional scholars to deliver regular seminars. Caliphs endowed the institution with extensive manuscript collections to support research. Although conflicts dispersed the original library holdings, this academic framework persisted and ultimately grew into a premier Islamic university.

Subsequent caliphs altered the complex into the courtyard visible today. Caliph al-Hafiz added the keel-shaped arches, carved stucco reliefs, and the entrance dome over the prayer hall. Dynastic changes later disrupted this patronage when Saladin deposed the Fatimids. Ayyubid officials suspended congregational prayer, stripped silver bands from the niche, and redirected the school toward Sunni doctrine.
