O'Hare International Airport functions as a vast global junction with direct transit connections into the central city.

The airfield originated during World War II as an aircraft manufacturing site called Orchard Place, which produced Skymasters for military service. Commercial planners later converted the acreage into an aviation hub designed around concourses extending from central passenger buildings, pioneering direct highway access and jet bridges.
