Duke University shapes Durham through distinct collegiate districts built during rapid philanthropic expansion.

Originating as a rural subscription academy in Randolph County, the institution shifted to Durham following land and financial contributions from tobacco industrialists. Julian S. Carr donated the ground now known as East Campus, while Washington Duke funded early building projects on the condition that women be admitted on equal terms with men.

A major trust fund established by James B. Duke in the twentieth century transformed the institution into a research university named for his father. The funds allowed East Campus to be rebuilt in Georgian style and initiated construction of the Gothic stone buildings on West Campus, culminating in the construction of Duke Chapel.
