Commercial independence shaped the Overton Hygienic Building into a foundational anchor of Bronzeville.

Anthony Overton established the property as the central headquarters for the Hygienic Manufacturing Company. The enterprise grew into a prominent national manufacturer of cosmetics for African-American consumers, housing commercial production facilities alongside executive offices within the Douglas community area of the city.
