Continuous human habitation defines the coastline, where modern harbor life sits directly over ancient archaeological layers.

Known locally as Jbeil or Jubayl, the settlement ranks among the earliest continuously occupied urban centers and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Successive layers reflect control under Canaanite, Egyptian, Phoenician, Assyrian, Persian, Roman, Genoese, Mamluk, and Ottoman administrations. Surviving defensive stonework, rectangular residential foundations, and plastered floors remain visible across the coastal tell.
