Hewn Icelandic dolerite anchors the national parliament building on Austurvöllur.

Alþingishúsið faces Austurvöllur in central Reykjavík and houses the national parliament Alþingi. For residents living in the surrounding downtown streets, the adjacent square functions as the main arena for political gatherings and public demonstrations. Parliamentary debates bring regular political activity, broadcast crews, and citizen assemblies directly to the building doorstep.

Architect Ferdinand Meldahl planned the classical structure using hewn Icelandic dolerite instead of imported timber. The exposed dark volcanic stone creates a heavy masonry exterior designed to withstand subarctic coastal weather. Long-term tenants in the district recognize the building as a central orientation point among the lower corrugated iron rooftops of downtown Reykjavík.
