The peak stands as the highest point in the nation and anchors an extensive national park.

The Cabécar people lived across these highlands long before European exploration reached the Cordillera de Talamanca. Agustín Blessing Presinger later completed the first documented European ascent of the peak. Chirripó National Park now surrounds the mountain, preserving expansive rainforest slopes and alpine habitats that make up the highest territory in the country.

Hikers reach the summit along an established trail that once ended at a crude metal shelter. A permanent concrete base lodge replaced that initial refuge, accommodating waves of trekkers heading toward the peak.
