Cartagena Cathedral functions as the episcopal seat of the regional archdiocese, recognized among the earliest colonial bishoprics across the Americas. Dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the basilica stands away from the harbor front to minimize naval attack vulnerabilities. Early wooden structures with reed roofing burned in general city fires, which compelled municipal authorities to seek royal aid for stone masonry.
