Instituto de Higiene represents the institutional foundation of Chilean public health architecture and epidemiological research.

Instituto de Higiene stands in the Independencia district as a monument to municipal sanitation and epidemic defense. Architect Emilio Jéquier designed the brick complex to house state laboratories for bacteriological analysis, disinfection controls, and vaccine production. The facility centralised chemical testing of public water supplies and food distribution, establishing modern epidemiological protocols for the capital.
