Gentpoort forms part of the medieval ring fortifications enclosing Brugge. The brick gatehouse historically guarded the road leading southeast toward Ghent across the outer moat. Today vehicular traffic bypasses the gate, leaving the surrounding ramparts open to pedestrians. Inside the tower, a municipal museum displays historical collections documenting civic defense.
