About the place

Renzo Piano converted this colossal automotive plant into a multi-use civic anchor without demolishing its rooftop test track.

Giacomo Matté-Trucco designed the industrial structure with upward production lines that moved raw materials from the ground floor to finished vehicles on the roof. Cars exited directly onto an elevated test track with banked spiral ramps at both ends. The facility once stood as the largest car manufacturing plant in the world and earned praise from Le Corbusier as an industrial benchmark for modern town planning.

Following the transfer of manufacturing to Mirafiori, the site underwent a complete architectural conversion led by Renzo Piano. The repurposed interior now accommodates the automotive engineering department of the Polytechnic University of Turin alongside concert halls, a shopping arcade, and a hotel. The rooftop level preserves the historic testing circuit and houses the permanent Agnelli family art collection.
