High elevation and an active state boundary shape everyday routines across the basin.

Lake Tahoe straddles California and Nevada, splitting administrative rules directly down the middle of local communities. The Nevada side permits commercial casino operations and levies different business taxes, while California maintains stricter zoning. Daily commutes cross this state line seamlessly between housing and lakeside employment hubs.

Winter conditions dictate movement around the basin. Heavy snowfall regularly closes mountain passes and triggers mandatory tyre-chain checkpoints on highways linking Reno and Sacramento. Residents depend on fare-free local transit networks around South Lake Tahoe, while drivers must prepare vehicles for severe blizzards throughout winter.

Water sports dominate summer routines, though high elevation brings unique operational challenges. Deep cold water makes scuba diving an advanced pursuit due to rapid decompression risks. Boating regulations remain strict, with federal oversight maintained by an active station of the United States Coast Guard patrolling the entire border waterway.

Part 3. "Twenty three dollars and three cents, please" or about the attitude towards Russians.

We live in Kings Beach by Lake Tahoe. It is an insanely beautiful place where people come to vacation from San Francisco and other big and small cities. Just so you can picture it. "Twenty three dollars and three cents, please" or about the attitude towards Russians. - "That will be twenty-three dollars and three cents, please," I say confidently and clearly to an American. And then comes the phrase I've gotten used to over the last three months: - "Sure, one minute. But may I ask, you have such a wonderful accent, where are you from?" - "I am from Russia, Saint Petersburg." - "Wow! That's great, that's a cultural city! How is the World Cup going? I saw on the internet that they built such a stadium, I think in Saint Petersburg, by the way. Can you tell me about the Hermitage, or about the capital of Russia? By the way, are you here for long? Do you like it here? My name is Thomas, what's yours? Well, see you later, thank you so much, have a great day and, of course, welcome to America!" By the way, that is exactly why everyone already knows my name and says hello to me on the street - it's so great☺️☺️ So, this kind of dialogue is a typical situation that happens every day. My tongue is already falling off from telling everyone the same thing, but they are genuinely interested, and some even ask how much a ticket costs and say they would like to visit there too. I've even met those who have already been to Saint Petersburg and they said it will be in their hearts forever. In all this time, I haven't encountered any negativity. A couple of times they asked where the accent was from, and upon hearing my answer, they replied, "Oh, I see! I knew it right away." I've talked to different people, and not once did anyone ask about politics, our president, etc. It seems to me they have no idea that there are any sanctions or anything like that. Everyone is friendly and insanely sociable. And they often laugh at their own president themselves.

Part 4. Bears in California

We were told a lot about bears in California. They were described as ordinary little dogs that are quite small, barely walk, and don't bother anyone. For the first half of June, we desperately wanted to meet such a 'doggy' in person, but our desire lasted until the moment we decided to relax and have a little whiskey. So, I go out to the balcony to get some fresh night air, when suddenly I see a huge, no, HUGE animal elegantly moving its strong paws along the road. Naturally, the thought that originated in St. Petersburg—namely, to pet the cute little bear—vanished instantly, and I didn't really want the whiskey anymore either. After that, we encounter bears on our way home almost every night. During the day they hide in the forest, and in the dark, when it's quiet and no one is around, they look for 'easy' food, specifically in trash cans. The police monitor very carefully to ensure that residents, cafe owners, and shops have mandatory locks on their containers. The thing is, a bear that has gorged itself on such accessible food stops hunting, doesn't go into hibernation, and then dies. And, unfortunately, the bears still manage to stick their paws into any crack and open at least some part of the container. Residents hang wires with adjustable current at the entrances to their homes because there are cases when a bear breaks into the house and eats all the food in the kitchen, and the local police drive after them in cars and try to send them back to the forest. There have been no recorded cases of attacks on humans at Lake Tahoe. People aren't particularly afraid of them because they follow the rules of conduct when encountering a bear. It's not for nothing that a grizzly is depicted on the California flag. P.s. and behind our store, a huge family of raccoons just lives.
