Informazioni sul luogo

Ulucanlar Prison Museum documents political incarceration through preserved wards and solitary cells.

The site operated as a state penitentiary before Altındağ Municipality completed its restoration and converted the grounds into Turkey's pioneer prison museum. The preserved facility retains its physical cell blocks, solitary confinement units, and execution yard. Researchers examining political history find an unvarnished record of state incarceration, as the compound presents institutional confinement without decorative alteration.

Beyond its administrative record, the compound shaped Turkish cinematic representations of incarceration. Director Yılmaz Güney drew directly on his familiarity with the penitentiary when creating the film Duvar. The production team of Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar filmed inside the actual cell corridors, with lead actor Nur Sürer portraying an imprisoned political detainee. These projects cemented the facility in national memory.
