Residents along Passeig de Gràcia step straight into tour crowds outside the facade each morning before reaching the quieter residential courtyards of the Eixample.
Textile industrialist Josep Batlló purchased the townhouse on Passeig de Gràcia, originally constructed by Gaudí's former professor Emili Sala Cortés. Rather than demolishing the eclectic structure, Batlló granted Antoni Gaudí total artistic freedom to renovate the property. Gaudí collaborated with assistants Domènec Sugrañes i Gras, Josep Canaleta, and Joan Rubió to alter the main residence and enlarge the central light well.
The renovation intensified an architectural contest among wealthy industrialists along Passeig de Gràcia. Adjacent residences commissioned by chocolatier Antoni Amatller from Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Francesca Morera from Lluís Domènech i Montaner created a striking clash of rival aesthetics. This stylistic confrontation earned the urban block the local title of illa de la discòrdia, or the block of discord.
Batlló married Amàlia Godó Belaunzarán, whose family founded the newspaper La Vanguardia. The municipal council nominated the finished remodel for the annual building award, though the official prize went elsewhere. Following family ownership, the insurance company Seguros Iberia bought the property to run office operations, converting private bourgeois chambers into corporate workspaces.
