New York: First Look

We arrived in New York in the evening and our group headed to the New Yorker Hotel to the rooms booked by InterExchange. The hotel is located in Manhattan. We thought we would be staying in rooms with the people we arrived with, but upon reaching my door, I realized I wouldn't be alone, as I could hear voices from inside. As it turned out, the rooms were booked hostel-style, meaning about 4 people live in one room. My roommates turned out to be two Poles and one Bulgarian, who also arrived through the Work and Travel program. That's when the English language test began. I don't have major problems with it, although difficulties sometimes arise when trying to construct complex sentences. But it's okay, the language is getting easier. It was hard for me to understand how one could live in a room with three strangers. I was most worried about the safety of my belongings. It wasn't for nothing that I brought two locks for my suitcases. Without unpacking my things (why bother if I'm leaving the day after tomorrow?), I gathered all my valuables and documents into my backpack and kept it with me at all times, while I put a lock on the suitcase with my clothes and left it in the room. We gathered in the hotel lobby and went for a walk through nighttime Manhattan: we strolled through Times Square, grabbed a bite to eat, and returned home, deciding to take a serious walk the next morning. This is the atmosphere that reigns at night in Times Square: The next morning, we had a meeting in the hotel lobby for everyone who arrived through the Work and Travel program, where they talked about all the necessary documents, how to fill them out, and gave us instructions and booklets with information on how to behave in various situations and a lot of other useful information. Then, the ladies from Social Security came and accepted our documents for ID processing. It all dragged on for a couple of hours, and then we went for a walk around Manhattan. Everything is completely different here. People communicate differently, they are more open, everyone looks the way they want to look. The city is full of people, everyone who wants to earn money, and shops—shops are on every corner, and in each one, they want to sell you something. Everyone is happy to see you here, no one will walk by and bump into your shoulder. If that does happen, they will certainly apologize. This time we walked through the center of Manhattan all the way to Central Park. The center is more European, there are no gangsters here, no escorts, just business people, tourists, etc. Expensive cars drive around the city, and walking past expensive boutiques, it's impossible not to appreciate the stunning change of pleasant scents and perfumes of beautiful women and stylish people. Of course, I couldn't visit New York and not go to the Apple Store on 5th Avenue =) It's a huge store with Apple tech, where anyone who wants can touch and feel iPods, iMacs, iPads, iPhones, do whatever they want with them, surf the internet, etc. Store employees watch all of this closely and advise anyone interested. And at the entrance to the Apple Store, you can notice a line of Apple-maniacs who are stationed near the store waiting for the Apple iPhone 4 sales to start. When we were there, there were 3 days left until the start of sales. Psychos. Next, we reached Central Park. At the entrance, we met a person dressed as the Statue of Liberty. Central Park is a quiet place in the center of New York, huge in scale (like the city of Monaco), people relax here with their families, lie on the grass (I couldn't help but lie on it myself, having watched so many American movies), throw a baseball, play frisbee (throw a flying disc), and play baseball. A very large number of people come here for a run. You can meet people jogging through the park at every step.
