The New Gate stands at the highest point of the Old City wall, opening direct access into the Christian Quarter.

Ottoman authorities constructed the entrance under the direction of French consular officials and Franciscan friars. The portal features an arched opening framed by crenelated stonework aligned flush with the ramparts. Its opening created an unfortified, direct passage for pilgrims traveling from the Russian Compound and the Notre Dame Hospice to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre inside the Christian Quarter.

Daily movement through the gate differs sharply from older portals built with bent axis turns and protruding defensive towers. The gateway houses the Christian Brothers College just inside its threshold, linking exterior modern streets directly to interior religious institutions. An iron barrier allows police to seal the passageway under administrative orders, reflecting the gate position along contentious urban dividing lines.
