Номер 10: Washington state of mind

Washington in five words: heat, art, free, silence, and running. That is exactly how I remember it. National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden All students coming to the States for the summer can be roughly divided into two categories. The first are those who earn money for crazy trips around the country; the second are those who slave away at three (I'm exaggerating) jobs without days off to take all their earnings home. My Czech friend Michael and I were somewhere in the middle. Neither here nor there. We worked 14 hours a day and dreamed of getting away somewhere, but it just didn't work out: either our days off didn't coincide, or the weather spoiled the fun, or we just wanted to sleep in. In August, realizing that if we waited any longer, our dreams would go down the drain, we decided to act. Where to go? "W" - Washington - it's close, interesting, and budget-friendly. Still the same National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden After going through dozens of possible "how to get there" options, we settled on E-Point. 60 dollars round trip – at 9:30 AM you are at your destination, at 10 PM you are back in the center of our native Bethany – perfect. The first thing we noticed upon arrival was how quiet it was all around. I was prepared to see colorful crowds of people rushing everywhere as soon as I got off the bus, but in the end, the only semblance of a crowd that caught my eye was a group of toddlers that an attendant was vainly trying to get to move in the right direction. People, where are you? Going to Washington for 1 day is a bit of a stretch. We rushed around the National Mall, trying, as they say, to grasp the ungraspable. The phrase of the day became "come on, faster, we still need to make it there." National Museum of Natural History, National Air and Space Museum (must see!), Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol, White House, National World War II Memorial – we ran through all of this as fast as we could. Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum At the National Museum of Natural History, I spent a long time reading the information on the billboards dedicated to the ocean and the origin of life on Earth - tired of waiting, Michael came up with a great thing: "Listen, do like the Chinese: take photos of everything, and you'll read it at home, come on!" I admit, for lack of another choice, I did just that later on. It's embarrassing, but what can you do. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Most of the time was spent at the National Gallery of Art. Expecting to run through it in an hour, once we got inside, we immediately realized that we would fail this mission, gave up on everything, and began to slowly move from hall to hall with our mouths open. Monet, Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and Warhol – could I have even dreamed of this? At five in the evening, we felt as if we had walked a hundred kilometers in the desert – we wanted to lie down on the grass somewhere and not move. And we also wanted to eat. By the way, about food. For a whole hour, we wandered around the National Mall, trying, as it turned out, absolutely in vain, to find at least one working stall with burgers and hot dogs. Five o'clock is the approximate closing time for all the Mall's attractions, and "food," as I realized, works on the same schedule. We sadly remembered how in the morning, to lighten the weight of our backpacks, we stuffed the leftovers of our packed lunch into ourselves – fools! Who knew. My advice to those who are going to visit Wash – go to the city for a couple of days. Without thinking. It's worth it. And plan in advance what exactly you want to see, because the number of museums collected within this place can drive you crazy. There is an outlet here for absolutely everyone, whether you are a creative soul or a fan of ancient history. And yes, no skyscrapers or shocking buildings – all Washington buildings are elegantly strict, as if to say, look, I'm neo-Got

...Washington DC...

Early in the morning, we headed to the US capital. After reaching the hotel, which due to my carelessness turned out to be in a rough neighborhood (yikes), we rushed to the Mall. The National Mall is an open area with memorials and numerous museums. We didn't manage to see all the sights, but we did manage to see the main ones. That's a relief!) I captured the three branches of government: the very beautiful Capitol, no wonder several architects built it for 38 years. It is magnificent. The White House, I admit honestly, I expected more... But the games on the lawn in front of the house are very cool, great guys.) And the Supreme Court building. The USA, which conquered with its beauty. In the center of the Mall, you can see the Washington Monument. It is a marble obelisk pointing straight to the sky. And right opposite is the Lincoln Memorial, inside which a grandiose sculpture of Abraham Lincoln is installed. Yes, and between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial is the National World War II Memorial. In the evening light, everything looks so attractive and flawless that you don't want to leave at all, just sit and enjoy.)) We also visited the Smithsonian Institution and the National Air and Space Museum. It's something unreal. So many amazing things, really interesting and informative. I am delighted with this museum!) This city is completely different from New York. Such a contrast. Washington is a very calm and quiet city. It feels like a business city. But in the evening, the city comes alive. Fans appear in bars, all tables in cafes are occupied, and there are crowds of people in line in stores. Something like that... My thoughts are very contradictory. But definitely, this city is very beautiful and requires attention and detailed study. But unfortunately, I don't have time.((( Tomorrow we hit the road. Hello, Orlando!))

Museums and famous people)

A truly wonderful City of US History. We learned how to use the J metro. It's different everywhere, so check with the attendant beforehand to see how late it runs and how to buy tickets to avoid wasting time and nerves. We visited the Capitol J - there's a short history session there that's worth attending... A truly wonderful City of US History. We learned how to use the J metro. It's different everywhere, so check with the attendant beforehand to see how late it runs and how to buy tickets to avoid wasting time and nerves. We visited the Capitol J - there's a short history session there that's worth attending... My boyfriend had been here before, so we knew what we needed to see) We went to several Smithsonian Institution museums - the National Air and Space Museum, where we went to a half-hour movie. Definitely go - it's very relaxing - the screen is on a domed ceiling and the seats are comfortable for sleeping :) so we saw 20 minutes of a film about some new planet - and that was it - we fell asleep ;). Then there were the American history museums - well, mostly they talk about and show everything regarding the international relations of the States, the Museum of Natural History - the museum from the movie "Night at the Museum" - where we saw various films showing the evolution of almost all animals, a fantastic and incredible sight... The museum about animals. And we also visited the National Museum of the American Indian - both the museum exhibits themselves and the atmosphere allow you to plunge into ancient times... Unusual sensations, plus you can easily zoom in on any museum exhibits on the touch screen. Admission to Smithsonian museums is free, so be sure to set aside time to visit at least some of them. We saw the Washington Monument.

The struggle of finding housing. I want to move!

It's a nightmare! I've been looking for housing for several days, but all my attempts are absolutely useless! There are no options to rent a room in Smithtown at all! None whatsoever, unless it's an entire apartment or house, and that, obviously, is way too expensive for me. Plus, living with Rich is getting tiresome; I feel like I'm imposing on his family and him... Even though these Americans are so sweet, saying everything is fine and I can stay as long as I want. Rich tells me I can stay at his place at least until next Tuesday. But I have a strong desire to move out as soon as possible. Yesterday we went to look at one place, the cheapest one we could find, for $475 a month in the neighboring town of Port Jeff. This potential place is located near the train station, so I would be able to commute to work by train, since my cafe is right next to the Smithtown station. But this place is just something else. If it weren't for the price, I might have agreed. A man in a long orange robe opened the door for us. He led us through the backyard into some strange structure and showed us the room. It was unfurnished, just one dresser, the window was half-boarded up, and you could hear the trains passing by perfectly. And the strange owner of this dwelling turned out to be a Buddhist monk, by the way) He said that, in principle, he could provide a bed. But Rich and I left this as a last resort if we don't find anything else. Today we went to see another place, where a sweet grandma is renting out a room. But it's a bit expensive for me, $540 a month. Besides, the room is for 2 people, but if a roommate appears, the rent stays the same. Tomorrow we'll go to another place. And they said, damn it, that it's not hard to find housing in America... I don't know about everywhere else, but in my town and the surrounding areas, it's pretty tough. Honestly, I'm ready to move anywhere just so I don't bother Rich in his house. I can't do this. And Rich is truly a great person. I don't do anything at all; he solves everything for me—calls people, makes arrangements, drives me to and from work, and feeds me. And on top of that, I'm living at his place for free.

An unexpected turn

"Dima, get up, you'll miss your flight!" - his father's voice drifted from the kitchen. Dima opened his eyes. The day he had been waiting for so long had finally arrived. Who would have thought that the time spent waiting for the program to start would fly by so quickly. A slight nervousness set in; the guy was anticipating the unforgettable summer that lay ahead. - Dad, could you please tell me about your Work and Travel USA program again? You participated in it back in 2016. What was it like? - Son, that was 23 years ago; you know everything has changed since then. I worked as a waiter, had a fun summer with friends, and I'll never forget those emotions! But now the program has changed beyond recognition. Ever since NASA started involving international students in their expeditions as an experiment, you're not the only one who wanted to take part. Now it's not just fun, but also a responsibility, but I'm sure you'll succeed and won't let us down! Now go get ready, your flight to the Kennedy Space Center is in 3 hours. "What if something happens to me?" - Dima was nervous, standing at airport security. "Don't worry, it's 2039, the age of high technology. Don't worry, specialists from Interexchange will be watching over you; they won't let you get into trouble. You can write to them in any situation, they will definitely help you. Good luck, write often, I'm proud of you!" - Dmitry Olegovich, good afternoon. Welcome to the NASA distribution base. I am Captain Smith, I will be in charge of your team assignment. - Hello. Will you explain exactly what I will be doing and what salary I will receive? - Of course, your main task is space exploration for mineral resources, their extraction, analysis of planets for viability, you will be monitoring and predicting natural disasters, and conducting experiments with bacteria, plants, and animals. The work is dangerous, there may be certain risks to life. You will have to sign a certain number of papers, including non-disclosure agreements. The salary will be $190 per hour, with $280 for overtime. Do you have any questions? - Wait, the program description didn't say there would be any health or life risks. I'm a student, I don't want to put myself in danger. - I'm afraid you can no longer refuse; you signed the program contract where everything was described in detail. We need young and energetic people for this type of work, which is why we attract students through the Work and Travel USA program. There are indeed risks, but because of this, your salary will be high. - I don't want to, I refuse, I'm not ready to risk my life for money! I'm going home! Don't touch me! Let me go! - Sergeant, escort the young man to the bunker, it seems we have another rowdy one. "Dima! Dimaaa! Get up! You'll be late for class!" - his father's voice drifted from the kitchen. Dima opened his eyes. It was just a dream. - Dad, theoretically, could I be sent to space through the Work and Travel USA program and forced to risk my life? - Son, don't talk nonsense, no one would put students in such danger. Have you been watching too many sci-fi movies? - I just had such a dream, I could write a story about it...
