Golden 1 Center anchors Downtown Commons, replacing former commercial retail space with a publicly owned indoor sports arena.

The arena emerged from a municipal partnership with team ownership led by Vivek Ranadivé to retain the Kings franchise. Built by Turner Construction on the footprint of the former Downtown Plaza shopping center, the publicly owned facility anchors Downtown Commons alongside a mixed-use high-rise tower. The front entrance walkway honors former league commissioner David Stern for his involvement in preserving local basketball.
