Academic structures pioneered on this campus defined modern professional study. Dean Christopher Columbus Langdell instituted the case method here, turning judicial opinions into the central instrument of classroom study. He created the standard first-year curriculum in contracts, torts, property, and civil procedure that persists nationwide.

Historical ties to early benefactors continue to shape institutional scrutiny. The initial professorship derived from the estate of Isaac Royall Jr., leading to sustained campus debate over historic slavery links. The school subsequently retired its traditional wheat sheaf shield and replaced its official heraldry with a modern insignia.
