The institution stands within the historic Royal Palace facing Revolution Square, an epicenter of combat during the revolution that toppled Nicolae Ceaușescu. Following wartime and political destruction, the complex underwent extensive restoration to house recovered heritage. Its medieval section preserves religious art and architectural fragments rescued from historic monasteries demolished under the communist regime.
