Colonial fortifications in Old San Juan represent the earliest European defensive works preserved under United States administration.

The National Park Service administers the fortified network guarding the harbor entrance, anchoring the circuit around San Felipe del Morro and San Cristóbal. North America preserves matching colonial urban ramparts solely in Quebec City and Campeche. Shared with La Fortaleza on the global heritage list, these oceanfront bastions remain the oldest European defensive structures maintained under United States authority.
