Elector August founded the electoral art chamber inside the residential castle after studying writings by Agricola on collecting. Successive Saxon rulers, who also reigned over Poland, expanded these royal holdings systematically. August the Strong and his son developed extensive galleries and opened them to selected historical audiences, forming the core holdings that anchor the state museum network.
