Steven Holl designed the museum around curving light corridors that alter how contemporary works interact with Nordic daylight.

The institution houses modern acquisitions within the Finnish National Gallery, maintaining a contemporary collection that originally began inside Ateneum. Architect Steven Holl shaped the building around interweaving daylight and movement corridors, naming the project after a crossing of visual paths. An open competition selected his design ahead of submissions from invited international studios.
