A visiting researcher based near the National Mall trades steep neighborhood rent for direct morning access to aviation archives before tourist crowds fill the galleries.
President Harry S. Truman signed the founding legislation after decades of aeronautical collecting by the Smithsonian Institution. Early holdings included kites from the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and steam machinery built for early flight experiments. Without a dedicated hall, curators dispersed military aircraft across temporary sheds and displayed experimental rockets in an open yard.
The National Mall property previously held wartime barracks and the Civil War infirmary of Armory Square Hospital, which treated severely wounded troops. Construction of the modern exhibition structure followed congressional appropriations during the space race. Astronaut Michael Collins supervised the complex as director when the central facility debuted to the public during the national bicentennial.
Archival holdings expanded beyond the central mall through the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and preservation facilities in suburban Maryland. The national collection preserves space hardware returned from orbit, including corrective optical instruments from the Hubble Space Telescope alongside a ground backup mirror. Long-term visitors find that research materials remain distributed across multiple specialized centers.
