Death Valley sits in the northern Mojave Desert within the rain shadow of several high ridges, including the Sierra Nevada and the Panamint Range. Moisture drifting inland from the Pacific precipitates on western slopes before reaching the basin. Clear skies and sparse vegetation leave dark desert surfaces fully exposed to solar radiation, turning the long depression into an extreme heat basin.

Timbisha Shoshone families inhabited this basin for generations under the native name tümpisa, referencing local red ocher clay. The territory later saw prospector expeditions and industrial mineral operations targeting silver, gold, and wagon-hauled borax deposits.
