Residents near Tanglin use the shaded walking paths for daily morning exercise, treating the historic grounds as an expansive backyard steps away from the Orchard shopping belt.
The grounds originated when the local agri-horticultural society acquired land in Tanglin to replace an earlier experimental plot. Lawrence Niven shaped the overgrown plantations and virgin rainforest into a public landscape, introducing winding promenades, a military band parade ground, and Swan Lake. The colonial government assumed control once private society funding lapsed, preserving the English landscape design.
Scientific experimentation reshaped regional agriculture from these plots. Naturalist Henry Nicholas Ridley cultivated rubber seedlings received from Kew, developing tapping methods that turned the surrounding peninsula into the premier exporter of natural rubber. Later botanical leadership under Eric Holttum developed systematic orchid hybridisation, transforming the territory into an international hub for commercial orchid cultivation.
Beyond botany, the property accommodated Singapore's earliest zoological park, housing animal enclosures until maintenance expenses forced the colonial administration to shut the operation. During wartime occupation, academic Hidezo Tanakadate intervened directly with military command to prevent looting, keeping the plant herbarium intact. The site now preserves the largest assembly of tropical botanical specimens.
