Residents treat Rakowicki Cemetery as a quiet walking retreat away from city tram lines, using its tree-lined alleys to study regional art and historical monuments in peace.
Municipal authorities established the site on land acquired from the Discalced Carmelites of Czerna after health regulations banned burials inside city churchyards. Surrounding settlements, including Grzegórzki, Olsza, and Bronowice, contributed funds to secure burial rights. Architect Karol R. Kremer designed expanded sections in the style of a public park, incorporating masonry from the demolished Church of All Saints into the boundary wall.
The necropolis serves as the resting place of painter Jan Matejko and victims of a regional epidemic. Subsequent municipal expansions incorporated grounds from a former military base, leading to the closure of a local thoroughfare. The grounds hold status as an official heritage monument and received Pope John Paul during his papal tour, making the site an enduring cultural landmark along Rakowicka Street.
