A helyről

Mibu-dera anchors a quiet pocket of Nakagyō-ku where centuries of Buddhist devotion intersect with the dramatic garrison history of the Shinsengumi.

Founded by the monk Kaiken as a filial gift to his mother, the temple originally carried the name Komii-dera in honor of his home monastery. Imperial visits later brought the title Jizo-in, establishing its standing among regional worship sites. Medieval restoration under the priest Engaku introduced the Mibu Dai Nembutsu Kyogen, a silent masked dramatic performance that remains protected as important folk heritage.

The grounds took on a martial role when the Tokugawa shogunate quartered the Mibu Roshigumi at the neighboring Yagi residence. Soldiers of this elite unit, later recognized as the Shinsengumi, drilled across the temple courtyard. A bronze likeness of commander Kondo Isami and a regimental burial plot stand within the precinct, while a replacement Ksitigarbha statue from Toshodai-ji presides inside the rebuilt main hall.
