Scholars based in the Kunstareal divide their study days between these antique galleries and the separate sculpture halls across Königsplatz.
Architect Georg Friedrich Ziebland designed the neo-classical building on Königsplatz with Corinthian columns as a direct counterpart to the Glyptothek. The galleries hold state collections of antiquities from Greece, Etruria, and Rome. Munich distributes ancient art across specialised venues: sculptures stand across the plaza, Egyptian finds occupy a separate building, and regional Bavarian artifacts sit elsewhere.
The address changed roles repeatedly before securing its present collection. The building housed the royal antiquarium, accommodated the Munich Secession art association, and later held the New State Gallery. Severe wartime bombing wrecked the structure, requiring extensive reconstruction before the halls reopened to the public. Long-term residents discover a surviving monument adapted to modern exhibition standards.
