Commuters push through visitor throngs at Brandenburger Tor each morning to access offices along Unter den Linden.
The square sits behind Brandenburg Gate at the terminus of Unter den Linden. Prussian authorities originally designated the clearing as Viereck before renaming it to commemorate an allied victory in Paris. Surrounding embassies, the Adlon Hotel, and the Academy of the Arts collapsed into rubble under wartime artillery. Only the gate survived inside the desolate border strip that separated the divided city.
Reunification triggered a coordinated rebuilding program that restored diplomatic missions, the hotel, and the arts academy. Urban planning codes enforced stone cladding and consistent eaves heights across all new facades. Today the plaza bars private automobiles, leaving the paved expanse to pedestrians and commuters using the reopened Brandenburger Tor underground station, which once sat sealed as a ghost stop.
