Keepers and long-term researchers in Troja navigate steep valley paths daily, adjusting their fieldwork schedules to avoid the high summer visitor waves.
Prague Zoological Garden occupies terrain in the Troja district, established to advance zoology, protect wildlife, and educate visitors. Its grounds feature specialized pavilions, including the Indonesian Jungle and Elephant Valley, housing Western lowland gorillas and Komodo dragons. The institution coordinates in situ conservation efforts, returning captive-bred Przewalski horses to their native habitats in Mongolia.
Severe river flooding once inundated the lower grounds and destroyed animal habitats, prompting major donor rebuilding campaigns and protective infrastructure upgrades. The facility has since produced breeding successes with endangered Chinese pangolins, Lesser Antillean iguanas, and European collections of Chinese giant salamanders. It also maintains rare Brazilian mergansers to support conservation work in South America.
