Residents pass a monument carrying a buried cannonball from a Prussian siege every morning, a constant reminder of civic resilience.
Erected on the model of the Roman column at Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, the monument expressed both religious gratitude for the end of a regional plague and fierce municipal pride. Every mason and sculptor involved held local citizenship, choosing saints with specific ties to the town. The commission proved fatal to consecutive master builders, including the original architect Wenzel Render and several successors who died mid-project.
Artisans paid a severe physical toll to complete the gilding and stonework, with gilder Simon Forstner permanently ruining his health from toxic mercury fumes. After imperial consecration attended by Empress Maria Theresa, the structure came under fire during a Prussian siege. Townspeople successfully petitioned General James Keith to spare the pillar, leaving an embedded replica cannonball in the stone as permanent evidence.
