Researchers based in Quinta Normal trade modern climate controls for historic galleries where seismic damage restricts upper floor access.
The French naturalist Claudio Gay established the institution under a government commission to document the geography, flora, and mineral wealth of the country. Jean-François Dauxion-Lavaysse took charge as the opening director. Alongside the Museum of Fine Arts and the National History Museum, it forms the core state museum network.
The main pavilion originated as an exhibition palace for the Chilean International Exhibition before becoming the permanent home for botanical, zoological, and mineral collections. Staff researchers maintain regular scientific releases through the museum bulletin. Repeated earthquakes caused severe structural strain, leaving the upper gallery level closed to guests while the ground floor exhibits continue welcoming the public.
