Residents spending a term around the Garden District treat this Victorian brick house as an everyday retreat, trading cramped apartment desks for the café and meeting spaces right on Gould Street.
Architect William Thomas built the brick residence to combine his personal living quarters with his professional office in the Garden District. Following his death, municipal acquisition turned the property into a working boys' home. A dedicated expansion designed by architect D.B. Dick replaced the original office wing, while an on-site youth football team competed in a local league.
Provincial authorities later transferred the building to the nearby polytechnic institute, converting the upper floors into student dormitories. Residential use ended after municipal fire inspectors declared the upper storeys unsafe. Restored under its founding name, the property evolved into a student campus centre managed by the student union, featuring meeting halls, an expanded café, and a basement pub.
