Academic researchers and students share the courtyard passages around Ploschad Rastrelli with churchgoers, balancing working university faculties inside monastic wings with daily liturgical services.
The complex stands on ground originally utilized for processing shipyard pitch, giving the site its historical name. Empress Elizabeth commissioned the monastic sanctuary for personal retirement before ascending the imperial throne, retaining Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli to direct the project. Rastrelli executed the blue-and-white cathedral as a baroque centerpiece within an extensive ensemble of cloister wings.
Imperial power shifts halted Rastrelli's towering bell-tower concept when Empress Catherine curtailed baroque funding, leaving the interior unfinished for decades. Architect Vasily Stasov eventually completed the cathedral with neoclassical interior elements, dedicating altars to the Resurrection, Saint Mary Magdalene, and Righteous Elizabeth. Soviet closure and looting later transitioned the main hall into a concert space.
The cathedral has returned to religious use with daily Divine Liturgy, while surrounding convent structures accommodate university faculties of sociology, political science, and international relations. This split purpose brings a steady flow of scholars, students, and worshipers across the public square on the left bank of the Neva, integrating quiet academic research directly alongside active orthodox ceremonial life.
