About the place

Syntagma Square anchors public life in Athens as the principal stage for political demonstration and the primary junction of the municipal transit network.

Designed when the national capital moved from Nafplio to Athens, the plaza originally bore the name Palace Square. It faces the Old Royal Palace, an administrative structure that now houses the national parliament. A military uprising led by Dimitrios Kallergis forced the monarchy to concede a constitution, prompting the renaming of the plaza. Mass gatherings during the sovereign debt crisis continued this protest tradition.
