À propos du lieu

Fort Amsterdam stands as a military outpost shaped by colonial rivalry across the Caribbean.

The Dutch West India Company engineered Fort Amsterdam as an administrative headquarters and coastal strongpoint. Beyond defense, the interior functioned as a secure commercial depot for regional maritime traffic. Internal compounds held central warehouses for trading inventory, military barracks, a church, and official residences for company directors. Repeated conflicts between European powers transferred control of the garrison multiple times, leaving a layered colonial record that remains catalogued in Koolbaai.
