Residents in the central district face relentless evening pedestrian crowds outside the gates, trading quiet workday mornings by the cloister for loud nightlife streets at dark.
Founded by the archimandrite Ioannikios Stratonikeas within an inn compound, the church originally relied on hospitality revenues to fund its daily communal life. Earthquakes and urban demolition destroyed the surrounding inn structures, leaving the stone church standing alongside an annex designed by Ion Mincu. The building reflects classic Brâncovenesc styling through carved stone columns and restored dome frescoes.
The resident community maintains active conservation workshops focused on preserving religious heritage. Nuns restore deteriorated liturgical vestments, antique icons, and historical parchment volumes within the compound. The on-site library holds an extensive archive of Byzantine choral scores, while the adjoining rooms preserve decorative wall frescoes salvaged from Orthodox sanctuaries leveled during the communist era.
Daily services feature monophonic Byzantine chanting supported by a sustained tonic accompaniment, a liturgical style rarely heard elsewhere in the country. Long-term residents in the area experience the quiet courtyard as an austere contrast to the dense commercial lanes outside, though heavy weekend foot traffic regularly fills the small courtyard and limits working quiet during daylight hours.
