À propos du lieu

Kotor Cathedral stands as the primary Roman Catholic episcopal seat in the bay, anchoring the town square with its dual Romanesque bell towers.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kotor bases its administration at the cathedral, extending episcopal jurisdiction across the entire Bay of Kotor and the neighboring coastal municipality. Consecrated during the medieval period, the structure remains the largest historic building in the old quarter. Its twin stone towers and Romanesque facade define the central urban space against the surrounding limestone mountain slopes.

Repeated seismic events shaped the physical fabric of the monument over several eras. Powerful regional earthquakes caused severe structural destruction, requiring protracted restoration campaigns that spanned decades. The coastal tremors in the late twentieth century prompted an extensive multi-year preservation effort to stabilize the masonry before the bishopric formally blessed the completed interior works.

Beyond its ecclesiastical role, the complex preserves a treasury containing medieval frescoes, gilded reliefs, and ceremonial artifacts including a silver reliquary hand. Carved stone reliefs above the main altar depict the life of the patron saint whose image also appears on the municipal coat of arms. Long-term residents in the walled quarter live beside an active religious landmark that doubles as a municipal symbol.
