The sanctuary stands steps away from the dense retail flow of Via Torino, giving residents a quiet stone interior for mid-day pauses.
The complex occupies the site of an ancient shrine dedicated to Saint Satyrus, brother to Saint Ambrose. Commissioned under Duchess Bona di Savoia and Duke Gian Galeazzo Sforza, the layout incorporates a central nave with barrel vaulting and a crossing dome. Donato Bramante engineered the choir perspective, using painted stucco relief to project the illusion of extensive architectural depth into a shallow niche.
Giovanni Antonio Amadeo designed the main façade, while the standing bell tower survives from the preceding Romanesque building. Inside, the annexed sacristy follows a central plan lined with terracotta busts crafted by Agostino de Fondulis, who also modelled the Dead Christ sculpture. The original wall frescoes by Ambrogio Bergognone now hang in the Pinacoteca di Brera, replaced by later devotional works.
