Researchers settle into reading desks on Tryggvagata, sharing floor space with the municipal library while combing through historical negatives.
The institution began as a private venture named Ljósmyndasafnið hf before municipal authorities assumed stewardship and renamed it Reykjavík Museum of Photography. Relocating to Tryggvagata placed the photographic holdings directly alongside the city library, establishing an integrated public research hub where visitors examine historical prints and reading room collections in the same civic facility.
Administrative integration unified the gallery with Vikin Maritime Museum, Viðey, Árbæjarsafn, and Minjasafn Reykjavíkur under a single cultural administration. Curators safeguard massive collections spanning amateur family snapshots, commercial advertisements, press photography, industrial records, and studio portraits, documenting domestic routines alongside changing national landscapes.
