À propos du lieu

Built in the Corinthian order to display an ancient choral prize, the circular monument stands inside a garden on the historic Street of the Tripods.

Lysicrates financed a winning theatrical chorus at the Theater of Dionysus and erected the circular structure on a square podium to hold his bronze victory tripod. Slender Corinthian columns support an exterior frieze that portrays Dionysus punishing Tyrrhenian pirates alongside choragic vessels. The surrounding walkway preserves the original route of the Street of the Tripods toward the ancient hillside theaters.

A French Capuchin convent enclosed the structure as a library, preserving the stones while nearby residents called the monument the Lantern of Demosthenes. Lord Byron stayed in the convent lodgings, and friar Francis planted the earliest domestic tomato crop in the adjacent soil. Measured architectural drawings published by James Stuart and Nicholas Revett subsequently inspired classical revival buildings across Europe.

Soldiers burned the convent complex during the Greek War of Independence, stripping away protective monastery walls and exposing the stonework. Monks attempted to sell the monument to foreign travelers, and Lord Elgin negotiated unsuccessfully to remove the exterior columns. French architects cleared surrounding rubble to reconstruct the podium, though modern political graffiti still poses recurring conservation challenges.
