À propos du lieu
À propos du lieu

St. Canute's Cathedral anchors central Odense with Gothic brick vaults and an ancient royal crypt.

The cathedral, also designated as Odense Cathedral, represents classical Brick Gothic construction on the elevation of Klosterbakken. The subterranean crypt draws the steadiest stream of visitors, housing the displayed skeletons of King Canute and his brother Benedict. Long-term residents encounter the structure not just as a monument, but as an active civic landmark whose halls remain integrated into daily downtown footways.

Earlier masonry survives beneath the gothic brickwork, where travertine foundations from an older Romanesque church remain visible within the crypt. Aelnoth of Canterbury, an English Benedictine monk from adjacent Saint Alban Priory, recorded that first stone project after the king was killed in the priory. Odense governed a wide Baltic diocese tied to Lund, leaving an ecclesiastical footprint that still shapes the urban core.
