À propos du lieu

Akkavuk Masjid anchors the quiet northern lanes of the walled city as a prayer house built without a minaret.

The mosque stands in the Akkavuk quarter of North Nicosia as an unadorned neighborhood sanctuary. Unlike major Ottoman monuments across the city, the structure lacks a minaret, reflecting its role as a modest quarter prayer hall. Known locally in Greek as Tzami Akkavouk, the building integrates directly into the residential street fabric rather than dominating the skyline.

The current masonry hall replaced an earlier, smaller Islamic prayer space erected on ground previously occupied by a medieval Christian church. Historic surveys documented the surviving apse of that older ecclesiastical structure, complete with a moulded arched window. Later renovations cleared those masonry remnants, leaving a unified hall that erased the visible physical traces of the earlier sanctuary.
