Tenants facing Grote Markt hear the mechanical automaton ring the church bell through open windows, trading constant plaza noise for immediate access to central Leuven.
The church replaced an older Romanesque building from which only the subterranean crypt survives under the chancel. Builders advanced the Brabantine Gothic structure progressively from east to west over generations. Master masons van Vorst, Keldermans, and de Layens coordinated the stone work, linking the project to the town hall directly across Grote Markt.
Architect Joost Matsys drafted ambitious plans for colossal western spires, but unstable subsoil and depleted funds forced builders to abandon the towers before completion. Structural collapses lowered the remaining stonework to roof level, leaving low stumps. Despite their truncated state, the belfry structures carry UNESCO World Heritage status, and a detailed original model remains preserved in the southern transept.
Artillery fires and aerial bombings collapsed the timber roof and ruined sections of the northern wall. Postwar reconstruction replaced the prior dome with a Gothic flèche over the transept crossing to harmonize the silhouette. Outside the southern portal, a golden automaton clockwork figure known as a jacquemart strikes an exterior bell at regular intervals above the market square.
