À propos du lieu

St. Stephen Cathedral preserves civic memory and religious resilience.

The cathedral carries the dedication of the patron saint of Shkodër, succeeding an earlier sanctuary situated at Rozafa Castle. Construction began after imperial permission from the Sultan, replacing an initial wooden dome with resilient masonry. Inside, artist Kolë Idromeno decorated the coffered ceiling with frescoes showing the patron protector alongside angels dressed in regional folk garments.

Conflict, seismic tremors, and political upheaval repeatedly reshaped the sanctuary. After enduring military bombardment and natural disasters, the cathedral was converted into a municipal sports hall under communist rule, with its towers dismantled and main portals boarded up. Reopened for Catholic liturgy after decades of state atheism, the restored complex later welcomed a historic papal visit.
