Dense resort corridors define the community, shaping daily life around seasonal entertainment complexes and quiet regional river bluffs.

The settlement organizes its commercial life along Broadway and Wisconsin Dells Parkway, forming a continuous corridor lined with entertainment complexes and resort hotels. Daily passenger trains link the downtown depot to major hubs such as Chicago and Saint Paul, giving long-term residents straightforward regional transit. Peak tourist seasons bring intense vehicular traffic that abruptly recedes once the autumn chill sets in.

Daily routines require strategic planning because public transport is limited to local taxis and seasonal street trolleys connecting retail clusters. Municipal governance divides civic infrastructure between the main town and neighboring Lake Delton, requiring newcomers to navigate twin police departments and clinic systems. Beyond the neon waterparks, residential eating centers on classic supper clubs and community burger taverns.

Suitcase mood and the road to the destination.

After getting your visa, you feel a sense of relief and start thinking about packing—what to take, what to leave behind—and you already start imagining your first days in America. You get that classic 'suitcase mood.' That’s exactly how it was for me: after getting my passport and finishing all my exams, I started packing my suitcase and headed off toward my summer vacation. I flew with my friends via Vienna. It was a tough and very long flight to New York, and the journey took about 15-16 hours in total. Once I landed in New York, I couldn't even believe I had crossed the entire ocean and that I would be living away from my family in an unfamiliar environment for the whole summer. My happiness knew no bounds, and the emotions just flooded in. When we reached the famous Times Square, one of the most visited landmarks in the world, my friends and I just stood there with our mouths wide open. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to walk around the city because we had already bought tickets to our town. All our friends headed off to their respective towns, and my friend and I were left on our own. Our job offer was in a town located in the south-central part of Wisconsin—Wisconsin Dells. We bought bus tickets for the well-known Greyhound, and we had to travel for 25 hours with five transfers. Sure, many would say it would have been easier to fly, and maybe that's true, but before the flight, I read so many comments and heard so many stories about people traveling for 15-25 hours by bus, saying it was terrible and they would never forget that journey. I wanted to have an adventure so that our trip would be memorable for a lifetime. And that’s exactly what happened—the ride was incredibly long. Fortunately, the bus had Wi-Fi and power outlets, and the buses were very comfortable, but the one downside is that they are very, very cold. In fact, all forms of transport in America (planes, trains, buses) are freezing—it's just icy, especially at night. So, my advice: if you decide to travel to your town by bus, take plenty of warm clothes with you, or even better, a small, comfortable blanket.

My village and International friends

Finally reaching our town, we immediately headed to work at the Mexically Rose restaurant, which became our second home since we spent most of our time there. At work, the manager met us, fed us right away, introduced us to the workplace and staff, and helped us find housing. Don't be afraid of getting lost or not understanding something; people in America are very responsive and friendly, they will always help and explain everything. All summer we lived in a motel in a room with four girls: two Ukrainians and us two Kazakhs. It was interesting, and life in the motel reminded me of a dorm, as J-1 students from all over the world lived in all the rooms of the motel. Two days later we started working. The first week passed, and to be honest, everything wasn't as cool as I had imagined. It was really boring; we hadn't met anyone yet. It was interesting at work, of course, but afterwards we didn't know what to do with ourselves, and by the way, I wanted to sleep all the time. I think the time difference took its toll) Sitting at home in Kazakhstan and watching American life on TV, we thought only about how we would walk along the beach in Miami and the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, but that wasn't the case) Therefore, I would like to say: don't expect that everything will be just magnificent and that you will arrive to everything ready-made. There will be disappointments and possibly even tears, and you will face small difficulties, but everything will pass. Remember: Your summer will be what you will make of it (p.s. InterExchange), and that is truly the case. About a week later, an American family invited us to a barbecue, and after that, everything changed. We met many interesting people, and at some point, we really felt that we were in the most real America. A little later, we found a second job. In our free time, we visited water parks, museums, the zoo, rode attractions, went to clubs and famous American parties. And I will tell you honestly that everything they show on TV about American youth partying at beer parties is really true. I was a little shocked when I first got to one of these parties. No one there cares what you look like, how you dance, or what you are wearing; everyone just drinks an immeasurable amount of beer and enjoys their youth. I will never forget those summer evenings spent with friends by the pool playing UNO. Or those moments when, hiding from the motel owner, we ran to each other's rooms at night to gather together to play games and have an interesting time. And no one cared that you had to get up at 8 a.m. and go to work, and sometimes to two in a row, because once you get there, you want to spend more unforgettable moments and make your summer! All of June passed very quickly while we got used to the new country and the new environment, while we got the hang of work, and we already felt at home in this beautiful town. Wisconsin Dells became a real home for me, and I didn't want to leave anywhere anymore, and I realized that this is the real America. July just flew by unnoticed, especially because July is considered the busiest period, and almost all the time was spent at work. But even there we didn't have to be bored; we worked as assistant cooks in a Mexican restaurant, and that's how we got acquainted with the exquisite dishes of this beautiful country of contrasts. The staff at work was just wonderful, and our head chef Hector played a significant role in my life in America) You could always rely on him; he was like a brother to us, and we had a great time at work. We worked to Spanish music, dancing while cooking, which is very joyful because the atmosphere at work is very important! Sometimes we turned on Kazakh music and were so proud that somewhere in America, in a Mexican restaurant, Kazakh songs were playing)) By the way, many people there liked the song 'Tau Tau Sezim' by Berkut and Aisha! And in August, you start to realize that there is only one month left and you mig

Part 2 "Just three months to endure..."

It was the 8th hour of the flight from Moscow to New York, but I didn't lose heart and was full of anticipation. I was planning how I would spend my first three days in New York and what places I would visit. I was sure I wouldn't be disappointed. But that wasn't the case (No way). New York disappointed me. It disappointed me with its dirt, its smell, and the large number of homeless people. As soon as we left the Port Authority subway station, we were immediately immersed in all of this. And it's not that I was deeply disappointed. It was more like the feeling that you had been lied to the whole time. You were constantly told about how magical NY is and all that (Stuff like that), and when you finally get there, you expect something special, something unusual, but no. However, New York is saturated with a Russian spirit, especially the roads. Walking through Times Square in the evening, I still didn't understand that this was all real. I didn't realize that I had to spend three whole months away from my family and friends, away from everything I was used to. I realized all this upon arriving at my workplace – Wisconsin Dells. The journey was terrible. It was supposed to be a 21-hour trip with one bus transfer (Supposed to be). The trip dragged on a bit. Both buses broke down, and we spent a total of about eight hours waiting for another bus. In the end, instead of the expected 7 PM (Seven PM), I arrived at 2 AM the next day (Unbelievable). My manager met me, took me to the motel where I would be living, and said she would see me at work tomorrow. I lived with a Thai guy, a Taiwanese guy, and a Jamaican guy (International room). We had a wonderful atmosphere in the room; we often talked and joked, watched sports and worked out, told each other about our countries, and were surprised by the customs of others. However, all that was later; for now, it was the second day of my stay in Dells, and I spent my first day at Dunkin'. Everything went well; I didn't understand 95% of what I was told, but I smiled and kept checking my watch. It was the same on the second day... And the third... And the fourth... In short, for the first two weeks, I didn't understand absolutely anything. Not at all. Later, I was told it was funny when I was asked to do something, I would give an affirmative answer and wait until they showed me visually what to do. (Don't be stupid). The Dunkin' team was very friendly. Absolutely everyone tried to help me and explain how to make this or that coffee, what the difference is between a latte and a cappuccino, and how much sugar to put in depending on the cup size. I suddenly want some coffee... I learned quickly and was praised, which motivated me. The people were a joy. Americans are a wonderful nation. I adore Americans; they turned out to be so sociable and kind that at first, it was unusual for me. After all, not everyone in Russia can tell a complete stranger that they have a cool t-shirt. But here, they do. They always speak up, they are never shy, and they never shy away from a conversation. They don't have bad jobs, and they appreciate any kind of work. (Appreciate it). That's how Americans are. That's how they remained in my memory.

Part 1 "Why are you so obsessed with America"

"What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An idea! It is resilient and highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain, it is almost impossible to get rid of it. I mean a fully formed, conscious idea." © The idea to participate in the program formed completely by accident. It was April 2014, and while walking through the university building, I caught a glimpse of the phrase "Work and Travel USA" on a brochure. Looking closer, I saw a link to a website with full information about the program. During a lecture, I went online and started reading everything I could about it (bad Russian student). That was the exact moment the idea of going to the USA took over my brain. I infected my friend with it. And so, two ambitious comrades set out to conquer America. Realizing we were too late for the 2014 season, we decided to try the following year and eagerly awaited the start of the new season. All summer I watched various videos of students who had already been to America, their impressions and reviews. Every day I wanted more and more to experience all those sensations that the guys conveyed in their stories. I also clearly understood that I needed to improve my English level. Having bought a self-study guide, I spent 3 wonderful months with that book. I gained a lot of new knowledge (London is the capital of Great Britain) and confirmed my opinion that the best education is self-education. October arrived. Recruitment was open, and we went to the agency for all the information. All my friends and family were "for" this trip, except for my grandmother. "Why on earth do you need that America," she repeated time and again, but later she came to terms with it and supported me in every way. After going through all the difficulties of currency exchange, when the rate was exceeding psychological marks every day, paying for the program, and the agonizing wait for a response from a potential employer, I finally received a job offer and was ready to head to the embassy. Fate decreed that my friend and I were going to different places (it's bad). I was expected in a small town called Wisconsin Dells, and a job at one of the most popular coffee chains in America, "Dunkin’ Donuts" (sounds great). My interview was scheduled for May 13th. I was looking forward to this day; I had a premonition of success. Arriving in Yekaterinburg, I confidently entered the embassy, my J-1 Visa was approved immediately, and I was handed my passport with a stamp and a wish for a great summer (You lie!). Okay, nevertheless, everything went wonderfully, my visa was approved, and all that remained was to pack my bags, settle all issues at the university, and set off on the farthest and most exciting journey.

My summer or how it went

Many people write about what it was like. And I won't be much of an exception to the rule. I will only say that it was... scary and exciting. As a person who has almost always been confined within the borders of the RF, I will say that flying somewhere alone for the first time is truly a bit frightening. I flew to America alone. My first flight ever. My first trip abroad in my life (not counting Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan). My first trip anywhere alone. Without family, grandma, relatives, or friends. But this is what makes us stronger, more resilient to various life challenges. It makes us more mature. You feel it instantly. The fact that you are now responsible for yourself. You can't run and say, "Mom, Dad, protect me." That's it. You are an adult, fully responsible for all your words and actions. And you feel all this while the plane, on such a familiar and incredibly cool route: Moscow - New York, carries you to the best summer of your life. And then the most exciting part begins. I had a connecting flight in a few hours in Chicago, and I realized that I had to urgently get from Terminal 8 to Terminal 1. Actually, there was only one way out: try my luck and find someone who speaks Russian. The attempt was a failure, and a pretty girl, an airport worker, babbled something to me in English. First time in America, English not perfect... In short, I ended up looking for the way myself. What can you do - at least it's a new experience for my collection. And I won't bore you with the story of how I miraculously managed to get to my wonderful Wisconsin Dells, how I called my mom and told her that I was finally here and that I was okay. Because every person has their own story, their own life situation in the future, however, I hope the beginning of the story is laid out and it will be interesting to at least someone. I will only tell you about the brightest moments of the whole summer. Yes, it is categorically difficult to single out even a top 10 from my entire trip, to tell about a piece of it, and not get stuck talking for a whole day, as happens with my incredibly close friend. But I will try. 1) In first place in this top five, and far from last in my heart, is the wonderful city of Wisconsin Dells. A city that cozily sheltered me and all the students of that season for the whole summer. A city that literally hugged us during this period, protecting us from hardships. And there were some, just consider the news about a certain storm not far from us. For half the night we prayed that this bad weather would bypass our house and the homes of all the residents. It passed us by, sweeping through a neighboring town and destroying a couple of buildings. My favorite company, favorite family, and the coolest managers. For me, it became a place that gave me incredible emotions, a bunch of memories, tears in my eyes from the realization that we have to leave this corner of personal freedom and adult life, as well as a place that gave me America. Without my favorite manager, I wouldn't have felt like I was in a family there, in a real team, and in a city that not only knows how and loves to host students, but also a place that is perfect for understanding - this is the real taste of American life. Welcome. 2) As the second significant thing, I would highlight... a trip to Disneyland. Florida, a gorgeous state for people who are going to go surfing or ride through the sultry streets of Miami, but also for those who decide to remember their childhood and dive into it. Tears of joy, not understanding whether you are in reality or have fallen into childhood forever. When you meet painfully familiar and dear characters of your childhood, you smile with them, laugh, and tell them something. When you see these happy children, the no less happy faces of adults and elderly people returning to childhood. You see all this, you feel their atmosphere, absorbing you. 3) The third reason to go to the USA and the third place in my personal ranking is Ch
