A purpose-built coastal strip operates entirely around the cadence of Atlantic tourism.

The settlement sits along the Grand Strand oceanfront. Development accelerated after a logging company ran a coastal railroad for timber transport, allowing mill workers to ride train flatcars to the water on weekends before commercial inns opened. Hospitality now anchors the entire municipal economy, supporting extensive lodging networks, performance theaters, and seaside dining venues.

Living here without private transport presents immediate logistical friction. Coast RTA runs local bus routes along main avenues, yet service windows remain narrow. Motorists face aggressive traffic patterns and frequent collisions on confusing road layouts. City ordinances enforce strict public decorum rules, including a permanent ban on thong swimwear across all oceanfront sands under threat of police fines.

Seasonal influxes dramatically reshape daily life between quiet months and peak event weeks. Massive motorcycle rallies and coastal music festivals fill the corridors with outside crowds and noise. Long-distance travelers arrive through the international airport via major hubs, while passenger rail bypasses the coastal strip entirely, requiring shuttle connections from distant inland railway stops.

Myrtle Beach. Part 2.

At first, I didn't work because of the rain, so I managed to explore the surroundings and saw the ocean for the first time in my life. It was so restless, stormy, very salty, and endless. I chose the job based on the city's location, thinking I would swim in the ocean and sunbathe, but due to frequent storms, downpours, and a lack of time, I only swam 3-4 times. You can always go on a trip to the ocean and fully enjoy it. The work wasn't difficult. The only thing is standing outside for a long time in hot weather; if you're not used to it, your feet hurt by the end of the day. Consider the climate and, if necessary, look for indoor work—they have air conditioning. Communicating with customers boiled down to standard phrases; sometimes there was an opportunity to joke and chat, it all depended on the people. Most often, they were families with children, as it is a city for family vacations, sometimes just couples or children and teenagers. When going shopping, everyone usually goes to Walmart. Every time I went past the shelves, my eyes would widen because everything was so new and unknown, and I wanted to try everything. Keep in mind that most products contain sugar, so all students gain weight by the end of the season. In Myrtle Beach, there are two large outlets—Tanger Outlets. There are many stores on their territory, but the prices aren't particularly low, though they are lower than in Russia. During your travels, you will have the opportunity to visit other places with better prices and a larger selection. In the USA, you can order everything online. Usually, besides brand-name online stores, guys use amazon.com to buy any kind of goods; they have fast delivery and low prices. But a courier might consider your place of residence unsafe and not leave your order if you are not at home, or conversely, leave a very valuable item right at the door. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, it is better to arrange with your employer to place orders at their address. This way, you will save your money and nerves. For entertainment, I visited Family Kingdom Amusement Park and the Splash water park—for free, because I worked on their premises. I didn't really like the water park, it's small, but the amusement park is worth visiting, and maybe more than once, it's cool! My friends and I went to Sharkis club for a J-1 party. It was a "fiery" entertainment—music from different countries played for students from all over the world. Unfortunately, the season in Myrtle Beach ends in mid-August, children return to school, which means fewer visitors in the park, and there is no work. So, for the last 3 weeks, I relaxed and spent time with friends. By the beginning of September, hurricanes are forecast on the South Carolina coast year after year, and this year was no exception. For those who have never encountered this, the word "hurricane" can instill fear. That was the case for us. Panic, despair, acceptance, humility. My friends and I went through all these stages. Just like in an action-packed American movie—many residents left the city, shops closed, windows were boarded up, shelters were set up in schools and churches where anyone could come (you should do the same), and people stocked up on food and water. But in reality, the hurricane turned out to be strong wind and rain for a day. We had to sit indoors all day, but in good company, time flies. It was not without tears that I left Myrtle Beach; I was sad to part with the guys who had become so dear to me. We hope for a possible future meeting, even if not in the USA, but in any other country. Myrtle Beach became a place for me where I found truly strong friendship and unforgettable impressions. This is the city of my summer adventures.

Myrtle Beach. Part 1

Where I worked: sold Italian Ice at Family Kingdom Amusement Park Where I lived: Peggy Ann Motel I flew from New York airport with Spirit Airlines to Myrtle Beach airport. The flight was delayed by 2 hours. I didn't really enjoy flying with this airline, so if possible, use another one. The city airport is small and quiet. Stepping outside, I realized that I had accounted for the hot climate, but not for the nearly 100% humidity. Subtropics! Frequent rains, hurricanes. So, if you are going to Myrtle Beach, buy a good raincoat and waterproof shoes. As for public transport, I only saw two buses: one tourist bus - free, and another one running on a circular route (I didn't use either). I got to the motel by Uber - it was convenient and fast. Upon arrival at the motel, I had to wait a while for the owner to get the key and sign the contract. Therefore, agree on your arrival time with your landlord in advance. Tired after many hours of flying, I still found the strength to read the contract carefully and ask questions, but I didn't ask for a copy, which is very important to do! The contract may contain terms and rules of residence, the violation of which may result in you or your neighbors not getting the deposit back or being evicted. For anyone who hasn't lived in a dormitory, it will be stressful to share a room, a refrigerator, use a public bathroom, and encounter cockroaches, regardless of whether it's a private house or a motel. I lived in a student dormitory for 3 years and was absolutely calm about everything except cleaning. Try to agree with your neighbors on a schedule for taking out the trash and washing dishes. It's not always possible to reach an agreement with everyone. "Cultural difference" - that's how I explained my neighbors' behavior to myself, but there was also a big plus in this. The mentality of everyone who arrived is different. And yet, I was very lucky to spend the summer among guys from all over the world: China, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Ukraine, Mexico, Colombia, Lithuania, Jamaica, Jordan, Turkey, Poland, and Russia, of course. If I didn't talk to some of them closely, I learned about their culture from others, heard their language while passing by, and could already distinguish it by ear. The international company helped me chat more often in English about everyday topics, overcome the language barrier, try local dishes, learn new foreign words and traditions, and discover new countries while communicating. That is why, thanks to "Cultural difference", my summer was so memorable. In the first few days, you will need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) and a bank card. I heard that the student center helps students with this, but I went everywhere myself. Walking from my hotel was long, about an hour, but I had time, and I didn't want to rent a bicycle because my workplace was very close to "home", and a taxi was expensive. Later, I borrowed a bicycle from friends. (When riding a bicycle in the urban environment of Myrtle Beach, you need to be careful - emergencies and falls are not uncommon. So, follow all safety measures). Since the Social Security Administration and the Bank of America office are nearby, you can do everything in one visit. Everything turned out to be simple; it was enough to ask the employees or visitors. To get a number, you had to get an electronic ticket, fill out a form that I asked the security guard for, and then give it and your passport to the employee at the window. At the bank, you had to queue up, telling the girl at the entrance the purpose of your visit, then one of the specialists invited me to the office and, following his instructions, I opened an account. After that, he went with me to the ATM, used my temporary card, and asked for a $25 deposit to put into the account. At the same time, they do not burn out, but are available, that is, opening a card is free. Why do you need a bank card? To cash your paychecks quickly and conveniently. In the States

The States United Us.

So, it was May 20th, when I was standing next to the airplane and couldn’t believe that in a few hours I'm going to be in America! Isn’t that amazing that nowadays so many people, moslty students have that chance to travel all around the world. We have so many programs and associations that direct and help us to see the world. My Mum told me that when she was my age, they never got any chance to travel to America, England, Germany and so on. She thinks present time is an advancement time. And she’s so happy that teenagers can live their dreams. So, I've got that dream to come to the USA and started all this paper work with documents and all that stuff in last September. The program called "Work and Travel". This is such a good program for students. I mean we can work for the whole summer, we can turn the money back and plus we can travel and see so many beautiful places. That sounds really great, isn’t it? So during nine months I was collecting documents, I was looking for job offers, I was pretty excited about my visa interview and thanks GOD on May 12th I got it all and in a week I reached my dream place named America. :) I spent my whole summer in North Myrtle Beach , SC. I got my job offer in the best place ever IHOP. So I was working as a waitress and I did love it. In my opinion a server is a great job for a foreign student in America. 1) You work inside, so the heat doesn't bother you. 2) You improve your English everyday by speaking with the customers. 3) You never feel thirsty or hungry, because you work with the food. 4) And the last you can make really good tips. So I did love to be a server in IHOP. My first two weeks were really difficult, because it was my first experience as a server and everything was in English. I know customers can be different, but most of them are so sweet, nice and so open and it helped me to stay in tune even when I messed up with the orders and etc. I met so many nice people and made so many friends in IHOP. We became such a family during these three months and I feel so thankful for this! Also taking this chance to say THANKYOU to my boss Amir and two fabolous managers Amy and Peter. Thank you for forgiven me all my oversights and mistakes. Thank you for being so sweet and patient! :) So, later on after two weeks. Some of my friends and I realized that If we want to work AND travel and also turn back some money…we NEED a second job. We were looking for a second one almost for a month…I mean we found it quickly, but all these paper work took the whole month, which annoyed us very much. So my friends and I, we meant to work at the Market named Kroger. We supposed to work at Deli. So we have to deal with the meat. Cut the meat and sell it to the customers. My first day in Kroger was awful…because I’ve got this allergy on something. And I still got no idea what it was. Meat? Probably, because it’s full of chemical ingredients. Or maybe gloves? We had to work at gloves. And they also had these chemical things. I still do not know what I’ve got allergy on. But I felt so awful and I did sneeze every five minutes. I phoned my boss and asked him to do something. Maybe change my section or I’d better quiet. He said we tried to do something and the other day they sent me to a bagger girl. I NEVER liked this job. It was boring and I had to deal with the carts which I couldn’t stand, because it was too hard. Actually a bagger is a job for a man. But Kroger didn’t have any vacant places, but a bagger. They did have a vacancy for a cashier. But I was scared. It is my fist time in America and Kroger is my second job. I was scared that I could mess up with the money or coins. For the first time – they would forgive me. For the second they would probably do the same. But next time I would be fired. And I didn’t want that. Kroger gave us really good salary :) So even that I never liked Kroger and this job as a bagger. But people, they were so sweet. I met so many cool and great friends. You guys just neve

Myrtle Beach! A second wind for my summer in America and love at first sight))

A great Russian guy named Seryozha gave me a free ride to Myrtle. We met on the street in Folly Beach and hung out with our Russian crew—Tanya, Alina, Katya, and Seryozha—all week long! In Myrtle Beach, another Seryozha was waiting for me! After seeing my post in the 'Myrtle Beach' VK group asking about housing and work, he wrote that if I ever needed a place to crash for a couple of days, he and his friend Kolya would take me in, no problem! They have been living in America for 5 years, legally, and came to Myrtle for a vacation. We hit it off with the guys immediately, picked up two of their student friends, and went to a club, partying all night! The next day, Sergey left, but Kolya stayed for two weeks! From the very first evening we met, it was like a spark hit us—I won't go into details, but from that very day I arrived in Myrtle Beach, we have been a couple)) So I lived with him in the hotel for two weeks until he left too! On the first day we met, Kolya promised me he would change my perception of America when I told him I wasn't thrilled with the States at all! He took me to clubs, restaurants, and cafes, and entertained me as much as he could) He rented a moped, and we rode day and night all over Myrtle, happy and in love) On the fourth day, I finally snapped out of my carefree life a little and went to look for a job! I just walked along Ocean Boulevard, went into every cafe, and asked if they needed workers! I walked into an ice cream kiosk, and the owner asked, 'Where are you from? Penza?' Was I standing in front of a psychic? I really am from Penza! How could he have known?! It turns out a girl from Penza once worked for him, and she looked just like me! We had a nice chat, and he hired me on the spot! That was my dream job: standing at the register, taking orders, scooping ice cream, putting it into waffle cones, making milkshakes and beautiful desserts with whipped cream! The best part was that employees weren't forbidden from eating the ice cream! I ate it constantly and tried all 20+ flavors; it's delicious! No managers were breathing down my neck, and the tips for the week were enough to pay for housing! My boss, Henry, a Lebanese man, was always joking around, chatting with me, asking if I was tired, and pouring me coffee) There couldn't be a better employer!!! My coworkers were two girls from Ireland, a chocolate-skinned woman from Jamaica with the gorgeous name Nicole, and a 15-year-old American girl named Tori! Since moving to Myrtle, I fell in love, became an absolutely happy person, absorbed the American positivity and the habit of smiling at everyone, and the job felt like some kind of angelic mission, as if selling ice cream on a hot day was the same as gifting happiness to people)

Inception

Good day to you :) Almaty Airport. June 2nd. 9 AM. I never imagined what it would be like to fly so far away from my loved ones, to the other side of the world. And yet, my dream came true - I am just a few meters from passport control! The internal struggle between joy and sadness didn't leave me until the first step onto the plane's ramp. This is it! Off to chase my American dream! :) My companion was a childhood friend who was the initiator of our trip. Back in March, some guys from the coveted NYC who happened to be among my Instagram followers kindly offered to meet us upon arrival. Dangerous, risky? Perhaps, but they were our own people, fellow countrymen. And so, having desperately slept through the entire flight, waiting for sleepless walks through the night "city of dreams," we finally arrived. Honestly, not expecting to see our newly minted guides. But then the door opens, and two breathless guys are scanning the airport hall... We hadn't even left the building when a completely new scent hit our noses: heavy, yet somehow familiar. New York spread its evening embrace. Of course, on the way, we couldn't believe our eyes: skyscrapers, buildings, people, highways, the Brooklyn Bridge... No matter how detailed I describe it, everyone will have their own bouquet of enthusiastic emotions :) Destination: a restaurant. It was completely unexpected, having arrived in America, to see a menu in Russian and mugs with national ornaments :) Yes, this is all Brooklyn. Not having had time to miss "our" food, we wondered why exactly here. The answer was: "By the end of the summer, you'll start going crazy without our dishes." Shrugging our shoulders, we didn't argue. After parting ways with the guys, we took a taxi towards Manhattan... Driving along the avenues, littered with hundreds of shops and cafes, I silently marveled at how familiar everything seemed... Surely everyone has had that feeling? Apparently, it's all the influence of Hollywood movies. After walking around, we were quite tired and went to a hotel in the Queens area. In the morning, we overslept breakfast at the hotel and headed to a nearby grocery store. How pleasing it was to the eye to see small, bright, and so cozy houses along the street. But Queens is a more "African American" area, so at first, it was a little scary. To avoid living on the outskirts of the city, book hotels and hostels in advance. We took about an hour to get to Manhattan by subway. But every time, returning after the huge metropolis to our secluded and quiet area, we felt at home :) The following two days in NY were spent in unity with the city itself and its residents. The free and welcoming mentality of Americans will win the heart of any resident of any post-Soviet state. And that is very encouraging :) Excluding the details about exploring New York, I will add that we were in search of relatively cheap tickets on Greyhound to the coastal town of Myrtle Beach, SC. I repeat, book everything in advance. Ticket found! $75, 15 hours, 4 transfers. Given the frantic pace of life in NY, we slept peacefully for almost the entire bus ride.
