Sobre el lugar

Standing in the central district, the oldest stone building in the city marks the defensive site that anchored early settlement around the island freshwater well.

Mohammed Al Bastaki supervised construction of the original conical watchtower to protect the sole freshwater well on the island. The ruler Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan later expanded the watchtower into a defensive fort that became the permanent residence of the ruling Sheikh. Known historically as the seat of government and palace fort, the complex centralized political authority before the modern development of the capital.

Oil concession revenues funded a major extension that gave the fort its current layout. Common local names include the White Fort and the Old Fort, though the structure received its bright white exterior during modern renovations rather than historical construction. Repeated restoration projects preserve the masonry, leaving the complex partially open to the public while commercial towers enclose the surrounding blocks.
